Shakespeare’s rarely produced play impresses with simplicity

King John is one of those rarely produced Shakespeare plays that, after seeing this production, makes you wonder why that’s the case.

In the hands of director Tim Carroll, it’s crystal clear – and he creates for his audiences a unique experience in the theatre.

While not the best production at the Stratford Festival this season, it is definitely worth seeing. If history is any indication it could be a decade before it’s produced at the Festival again. It was last done in 2004.

There’s something refreshing about seeing one of Shakespeare’s more obscure offerings. Perhaps the expectations and comparisons fall away and the play really does become the thing.
