“I try to be nice to my children. They’ll be picking my retirement home.”

A joke, but not a joke, recently spoken by a local mother with young adult children.

The vulnerability of old age affects us all—even kings. King Lear, too, expects his children to care for him in his old age but finds himself unwanted.

The play opens with homeless men wandering through the night and the sounds of dogs barking. It’s instantly menacing and a taste of what’s to come.

All of the regret of aging, betrayal, madness and foolishness are magnified 100 times in King Lear.
